Changing with the seasons gives the library a welcoming atmosphere.  Thinking of ways to invite students in, to encourage reading, and to display student work is all part of reaching out to students and convincing them that, yes, this is a place they want to be!

Being flexible in the library throughout the day allows more classes and more students to take advantage of the available resources.

The library computer lab is great for whole group instruction.  Collaborating with teachers is a great opportunity for the librarian to generate a project guide that students can access from home or at school.  Project Guides direct students to the best resources, including databases, print books in the library, or the best websites to help them complete their assignments in the most successful way.

The library is also set up for small and large group work, individual study, and quiet areas. Creating a flexible space reaches more learning styles and increases opportunities for student success.  Of course, one-on-one help is also available every day.

This year Humble ISD implemented the BYOD Program, so the library was re-arranged to allow space for group work on laptops as well as to accommodate individual students who bring their own mobile devices.

This is the time of the year when I start sorting, cleaning, and reflecting.  These three really seem to go hand in hand.  The more I sort and clean in the library, the more I reflect about the year.  So, I decided to post pictures and reflections of this past school year.  The Makerspace was one of the biggest projects  in the library this year, and I enjoyed watching the students as they began to discover it.

Since the Circulation desk so big, part of it is now the Makerspace Place.

The MakerBot 3D Printer is the most innovative purchase in the Makerspace.  Students can design their own creations in Tinkercad, or they can print 3D models from Thingiverse.
One of the library goals is to collaborate with other subject areas.  Integrating the library into the curriculum makes it more relevant to student learning.

This Art I student painted a book cart as part of  Mobile Maker.  Teachers are allowed to check out Makerspace materials for class projects.

The students are finding the Lego Kits in the Makerspace,  and these students are competing against each other to build Lego birds.

Some like to work independently, and this student
just finished the Lincoln Memorial Lego Kit!

Learning With the End in Mind - The Ever-Changing Library

Anything that I am passionate about, anything that matters, or anything that I learn or research, I do fervently with the end in mind.  The goals that I set, I do so because I want to achieve a certain end or result.  And that is the way I view what I do as a librarian.  I want to know that the library impacts students in a positive way so that they feel successful in their lives and truly become life-long learners.  This will make the world a better place for all of us.  And as we all learn new things and our goals change, we begin to have new ideas and plan things with a new end in mind.  So I want to share what I have learned along the way, hoping that it might help you, help them.
